Assess Students
The purpose of conducting assessments is to find out where students are with their self-determination skills. From there, we can make informed choices about the areas of instruction that are needed to help students increase their skills. All of this will help us as educators to determine the best starting point for students to participate in the IEP process.
Assessment Resources

- The Self-Determined Checklist-Student Assessment Links to an external site. is from the I’m Determined website. It consists of a student self-rating scale that measures how much the student knows about themselves, their goals, and the supports they need to reach those goals.
- The Student Rubric for IEP Participation Links to an external site. is also from I’m Determined and is a student rating scale from 1 to 5. It measures: IEP awareness, IEP participation, knowledge of IEP content, abilities and disabilities awareness, knowledge of rights and responsibilities, and social and communication skills.
- The ChoiceMaker Self-Determination Assessment Links to an external site. can be used with middle and high school students who have mild to moderate disabilities. It helps measure self-determination skills and opportunities to exercise these skills across three areas: choosing goals; students' involvement in their IEP meetings; and students' attainment of IEP goals.
- The AIR Self-Determination Assessments Links to an external site. produce a profile of the student's level of self-determination. The AIR scale identifies areas of strength and those that need improvement. It also identifies specific educational goals that can be incorporated into the student's IEP. It measures self-determination in two broad components: capacity and opportunity. Capacity refers to the student's knowledge, abilities, and perceptions that enable them to be self-determined. Opportunity refers to the student's chances to use their knowledge and abilities.
- And finally, the Me! Scale Links to an external site. is a student rating scale that measures knowledge about disabilities, IEP process, skills and needs.
Next – Inform Families/Caregivers
