Review: Course of Study

  • Write the Course of Study
    • Includes classes, opportunities, and experiences that relate to the youth’s postsecondary goals, interests, and preferences.
    • Consistent with the student’s specific postsecondary goals and should reflect future coursework and instruction.
    • Should align with the High School and Beyond Plan.
  • Example: Felicia
    • Felicia’s course of study aligns with her post-school goals of enrolling in a welding program and to be employed as a welder.
  • Example: Javier
    • Javier’s education/training goal is to obtain an associate degree in Criminal Justice, and his employment goal is to be a police officer or security guard.
  • Example: Jasmine
    • Jasmine’s education and training goal is to participate in an on-the-job training program in the hospitality industry (restaurant and food/beverage services).
    • Her employment goal is to be employed as a restaurant server.
    • Her independent living goal is to use public transit to travel to and from work as well as to recreation and social activities.
    • Jasmine’s course of study aligns with her post-school goals and includes work experience and alternate curricula.
  • Non-Examples
    • Forms with checkboxes without additional information.
    • Refers to present, in-school activities rather than future activities or courses.
    • Identifies a placement with no information about curriculum or any indication of relevancy to post-school goals.

  2. Describe how the course of study supports the postsecondary goals.

Extension Activity (Optional)

Meet with a school counselor. Share and discuss information about the course of study in the transition plan.

  1. Was the school counselor aware that this information was included in an IEP?
  2. Has the school counselor participated in developing the course of study for a student either by providing information or consultation or by attending the IEP meeting?
